The Nonsense that Nothing Good is Happening in Politics and Government

Posted on 02/19/19 by Michael Sprague

As I participated in the National Prayer Breakfast again this year, I rejoice that I am part of an international family of friends who are using their time and influence to help the poor and share the person of Jesus. I am fully convinced that partnerships and friendships between political, faith and business leaders are making, and will continue to make, an incredible difference. Here’s a little sampling of encouragements.

1. People gathered from 140 nations including our President, Vice-President, Speaker of the House, many Senators and Representatives, several Heads of State and many others united to find out how Jesus might make a difference in our world.

2. Gary Haugen, Founder and President of International Justice Mission was the keynote speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast this year. Gary told us that there are 40 million slaves in the world today, yet we could be the generation that ends slavery through people and ministries that fight violence, injustice and slavery. He called us to not give up in doing good for in due time we will reap if we faint not. He reminded us that sooner or later the King calls from His throne for an account to be given for injustice. Gary’s first encounter with the National Prayer Breakfast was as a 19-year-old, and it inspired him to his life calling.

3. A friend named Rick decided to ask if the 100 White House Fellows would be interested in attending the Breakfast. One hundred Fellows said “YES.” Someone from the White House called and asked if this could be built into their program every year. Many of these one-hundred will be future Governors, Cabinet members and key leaders.

4. Christine, a woman who was in my small group, is using her years of experience at CNN to now lead a team that is taking on and exposing the systemic sexual abuse practices and systemic cover-ups in religious organizations. She came to faith through a Prayer Breakfast leader.

5. Tony Hall, former Democratic Congressman from Ohio and U.S. Ambassador for World Hunger shared about his 30-year weekly friendship and prayer commitment with Republican Congressman Frank Wolf and the incredible national and global accomplishments that have sprung out of their weekly prayer together. Tony met Jesus through the ministry of the Prayer Breakfast leaders. Many Democrats and Republicans meet weekly for prayer together.

Pastor Andrew Brunson

6. Many, many people prayed for Pastor Andrew Brunson who was imprisoned in Turkey for two years. He was freed in October. I got to meet him at the National Prayer Breakfast. He is home!!!!!!

Chris Tomlin

7. Chris Tomlin lead us in worship. Twenty years ago, he was a country boy who only knew three songs. A young man named James told him he wasn’t very good, but that one day he would become the world’s songwriter. That man, James, went on to become the U.S. Senator from Oklahoma and lead the Breakfast this year, and Chris Tomlin became well … Chris Tomlin!

8. It was a joy to meet one-on-one with many of our Louisiana Senators and Representatives and pray with them in their offices.

9. Finally, I am amazed at the power of God to reach into the lives of people from around the globe. Often, we get tricked to give our lives to a religion rather than a person … Jesus. He alone is mighty to save. The stories heard at this year’s Prayer Breakfast are too numerous to share. We are told in John 5:17 that the Father is always working … whether we see it or not. This is true both in government and in your life and mine.

Prayer Requests

  • Donna and I are leading a group of 55 to the Holy Land, March 1-10.
  • Our Louisiana Legislative Session gears up when we get back and I will spend a lot of time caring for leaders at the Capitol. We are committed to helping leaders take next steps in their faith and callings.

When Your Elected Leaders Embarrass You … Keep Perspective

Posted on 01/11/19 by Michael Sprague

The next time you are embarrassed by your national leaders … remember Sporus! Nero was Caesar while many of the New Testament books were written. Nero’s cruelty, ruthlessness and depravity are well documented as well as his burning Rome and pinning the blame on the followers of Jesus. What isn’t well known was the wedding of the century. Nero kicked his pregnant wife to death and decided to marry Sporus. Sporus was a young boy whom the Roman Emperor favored, castrated (so his boyish looks wouldn’t change) and wed.  It was said Sporus had an uncanny resemblance to his first wife. The wedding was public with all the pomp and circumstance of royalty … rose colored veil and long dress. Think Prince Charles and Lady Diana. When the officiating officer asked, “Does anyone object to this union? Speak now or forever hold your peace.” You can bet everyone bit their lip. Nero and Sporus paraded around the city making out. Nero made everyone address Sporus as “Empress.”

We increasingly live in a Post-Christian society and grabble with how to respond. Rage, withdrawal and grumbling are often the modus operandi. Maybe we need to remember Nero and Sporus the next time an elected leader embarrasses you. This will keep things in perspective. Interestingly, Paul didn’t protest, boycott or even mention the wedding of the century in his writings. He knew that King Jesus had given clear cut marching orders, “Go and make disciples…” I know … those words are not as nifty as the cool, sexy, shiny, new things coming down the pike. Take note! We must not confuse the sensational with the significant. At Capitol Commission … we have never been nor will ever be sensational. However, we endeavor to do something eternally significant – Jesus Centered Disciplemaking.

  • It’s what we do
  • With everyone
  • Everyday
  • Everywhere
  • As long as we have breath

We help form political, business and faith leaders for kingdom initiatives. These leaders serve sacrificially and lead well in Jesus’ name at the critical intersections of our day.

Prayer Requests

  1. The Louisiana Legislative Session starts April 8- June 6.  Twenty-one percent (24 of 105) of the House will be new Legislators and 41% of the Senate (16 of 39). Pray for opportunities to get to know these new leaders.
  2. The National Prayer Breakfast is right around the corner. You can watch it live on February 7th on C-SPAN. Pray for our Louisiana delegation to recognize divine appointments. Pray for my appointments on Capitol Hill with our Louisiana leaders. Our team is gearing up for the Governor’s Prayer Breakfast on April 10th (tickets can be purchased at www.lagpb.org) and the National Day of Prayer Capitol Event on May 2nd.
  3. I’m thankful for all God’s provision through wonderful friends in 2018. TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!!
  4. Pray for a reconciliation project with the NFL. I’m involved with U.S. Ambassador, former Senate Chaplain and a former NFL player. This would take a mighty move of God.

Capitol Commission Louisiana 2018 Year-End Newsletter

Posted on 12/15/18 by Michael Sprague

Our ministry sprouted eight years ago with a dedication to reach Political, Business and Spiritual Leaders for Christ, one leader at a time. This ministry is like a tiny, tiny, tiny mustard seed that gets planted in the ground. No one says, “Amen” to a mustard seed. Nobody says, “Yeah, slow organic growth.” So many want a Kingdom style to be swift, forced, visible and powerful, but Jesus says go with the mustard seed approach, emphasizing steady, stealthy, healthy planting, watering and cultivating. In time, the Kingdom bursts forth fruit with 30, 60, or 100-fold.

Almost every day I am experiencing a thriving community of Jesus followers and leaders from all stripes and traditions who humbly are honoring God, loving neighbors, serving cities and towns together not as one church, but as “the” church without a whole lot of notoriety, rancor, blaming, shaming and polarization. We are learning to build up, not simply to tear down. Redemptive possibilities are everywhere and mustard seed miracles are breaking forth.

I marvel at redemptive friendships with Legislators, Judges, State and Local Government leaders, Lobbyists, staffers, journalists, political operatives and staff.

Bible studies are every day of the week except for Saturday … some weekly, some monthly. I spoke over 240 times to groups this year. What joy!

Writing projects have increased. One post recently went viral and has been shared 34,000 times in two months, meaning several million people have seen it. It’s a 4-minute read on the gospel and life of Jesus. Only God.

Doors have opened locally, statewide and nationally. These are redemptive windows. I’m believing that our best days are ahead.  It is thrilling to see my dream of walls breaking down between Political, Business and Faith Leaders. Where trust filled relationships develop … anything is possible. I tell leaders all the time that things can happen in Jesus that can never happen through pure politics.

It is easy to see the world as an unmitigated disaster. Yet some are seeing the world as a glorious opportunity to serve people, so they might know about the marvelous yet scandalous grace of God that is available to all. Some are worried about the future of Christianity. I am not. Yes, many are turning away from idolatrous forms of cultural and political Christianity. People are tired of man-made religion and yet many in this Post-Christian culture are being drawn to the ravishing person of Jesus and His movement that is not based on politics, fear and rage. I look forward to 2019!!

Please Pray For …

  • Our family. Being “Poppy” and “GiGi” is simply the best!
  • Revitalization and renewal in the United States of America. There was a first great awakening. Why can’t there be another one? Jesus is God and with Him all things are possible. I want to be part of the next move of God.
  • New Partners in the work of Capitol Commission Louisiana. No emotional appeals or fundraising tactics. If you are looking for a Kingdom place to invest, if our work registers with you in deep ways, c’mon and jump in with support, service or prayer.
  • Open doors to speak on the topic, Is There Hope For America?, The History of Christianity in America or Jesus: Who Is He? Maybe you, your church or group will be one of the answers to this prayer!

Financial Update

I have not mentioned finances since last December. The core of the ministry has been supported by people making monthly commitments to GRACE ADVENTURES, and this has been supplemented by one-time gifts. I am grateful. As a faith-based ministry, I am responsible to raise all of my support.

Thank You

Donna and I would not be able to strategically focus this way without friends who partner with us in prayer, encouragement and support. It is a great honor to share this ministry with you. We are most grateful. YOU play a huge role in every business person who finds faith … every lonely leader who is encouraged … every person who is reminded not to quit … every seed sown … every political leader who discovers Jesus is worth following … every revitalized soul who discovers their purpose. Thank you, friends. What greater thing could we do than partner with Jesus in His mission to rescue the hearts of those He loves.
